Still Life with Baby Silas

I thought I'd continue with the third generation of my family portraits I've completed in recent years. I've already posted my husband, his daughter (my beloved stepdaughter), and now for her first born - our first grandbaby Silas. Amanda sent a photo of Silas sleeping on their bed with some winter light streaming in through their window. I loved the photo and the shadows on the sleeping baby, so decided to paint it like a contemporary still life - abstracted background with baby sleeping as though on a kitchen table top. At least that was my concept. Here is "Still Life with Baby Silas", acrylic on canvas, 12"x16", completed in 2006. This painting was started and mostly completed during a couple of painting sessions with my Mama Lisa painting group. This reminds me that I am behind on my family portraits - Amanda had a precious little girl, Priya, a year and a half ago, and is now expecting number three in May. I guess I have some catching up to do!

Nova Scotia Cow No. 2 - " Anabel"

This is the last cow portrait I completed for the Divine Bovines show. It is also a large painting (36 in. x 48 in.). Actually this canvas was originally purchased for the Sweet Home Farm Bull, but I found that it was not long enough for the bull - therefore, I had to do another cow portrait in order for this canvas not to go to waste! Actually, this is one of my favorites. I was able to complete Anabel pretty quickly for me (3 to 4 weeks). This acrylic painting was finished in February 2009 for the Divine Bovines show. I really love the goldenrod background (Yellow oxide, which was a new pigment for me) against the black and white cow. Again, very little true white and no black on this cow. My favorite parts are the udder and the swollen veins, since she looks like she really needs to be milked. I also had fun with the grass.

Sweet Home Cheese Farm Bull

This is the first large cow portrait (36 in x 60 in., acrylic on canvas) I have attempted. I took a photo of this bull when my family went to visit the Sweet Home Cheese Farm near Elberta in south Baldwin County, AL, This place makes wonderful boutique cheese. My concept was to paint a white cow with back-lighting, so there would be no white paint on this cow. Because it is a bull, I thought the red background would be an effective statement. Although this is a "realistic" portrait, I really love the abstract quality of the colors and shadows on the body of the bull. I finished this painting in early February 2009, just in time for the Divine Bovines: The Cow as Art exhibition.

Cows at the Graham Ranchette (1996)

This is my second painting of cows in watercolor. I entered this in one of the Mobile Art Association shows which hung at Mobile Museum of Art, and the judge liked the movement captured in this painting. Note that the next cow painting I attempted was in 2006 (10 years later). I was working fulltime and was not a very productive painter. My first painting of cows was also a watercolor, which was exhibited in a Bel Air Mall shop window (MAA Exhibition). It sold, so I no longer have a copy to display (but was able to scan in a photo for documentation purposes, as shown in the photo below).
